Our Philosophy of Athletics
Taft High School seeks to provide a broad and varied program of interscholastic athletics that will meet the needs and interests of our skilled students. The administration and coaching staff are primarily concerned with assisting students in acquiring the educational benefits and values inherent in a fine athletic program. Participation in athletics is a privilege, not a right. This carries responsibility to the team, school, student body, community and of course the athlete themselves. The athlete must realize that they are student-athletes not athletic-students. Therefore we stress academics first and sports second. While we motivate students towards winning and hard work, this must be done within the parameters of sportsmanship and fair play. Athletic participation is an integral part of a well-rounded learning experience. Through athletics the student-athlete learns team work, self-discipline, time management, commitment and problem solving. These are just some ways athletics can provide the potential for our student-athletes to become better people and citizens. — Nick Nishibayashi, Athletic Director |
